Yes, I’m still alive

August 14, 2013 2 Comments

Screen shot 2013-08-13 at 6.36.40 PMSorry to all 6 of my faithful 6birds fans! Haven’t posted in awhile not because nothing is going on, but because it’s been crazy. No excuses. Here’s some highlights:

1. I saved $28,000 worth of interest charges after spending about 8 hours in financial combat. It’s a bit complicated, so I’ll post details later, but everything is better in my financial world. Cash flow is better, and interest rates are better as a result of having stellar credit ratings. More money is flowing into investment accounts. I paid off a piece of farmland and a plague of a student loan I’ve carried for nearly 20 years. Needless to say, I’m as pleased as Ken at a Barbie convention.

2. I am working diligently on coding a new niche e-commerce site from the pixeled ground up. I’ve dabbled in the “passive income” game before with terrible results, but this time I have an actual plan (imagine that — there’s nothing passive about passive income), and am working much smarter. I’m pretty sick of reading case after case of people deriving income from some internet site they put up and left for dead. So sick of reading about this in fact, that I’m laying this one to rest. If I can’t discover the formula, then that’s it. Good news is that I am keeping an accurate record of step-by-step. If you don’t measure it, you can’t change it.

That’s right, I’m recording every reference, resource, action, time spent, money spent, etc. I’ve realized that in the past I’ve been too passive about passive income. This is real effort this time, which of course is always scary. It’s always easier to half ass then proclaim, “it’s not for me.” If it works, I’m sharing. If it fails, I’m sharing. You’re welcome.

3. I’ve still been writing over at my other blog, but it doesn’t have much to do about money.

4. I’m reading (thanks, Library)Professor (!) Cal Newport’s brilliant skill vs. passion manifesto, So Good They Can’t Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. It’s the best book of the guru genre I’ve ever read, and I highly recommend it. There’s always been something that rubbed me about the passion hypothesis that seemed idiotic, but I could never pin it down until now. This dude is insightful as hell.

5. My dad just finished his book. I’ll be checking that out too — after my parents leave from their visit. I want to be objective, and having him around doesn’t let me do that because I know him too well and respect him too much. I need to read it as if I didn’t know him, and his persona is too powerful when we’re close.

6. I have all but given up the battle against spam on 6Birds. All the spam filters just aren’t working, and it’s the first time I’ve ever published a blog where I had this problem. Of course, I’m rocking WordPress, but I’m also thinking about coding my own site and transferring everything over, but wordpress is just so damn easy. Right now, I’ve got comments set to “subscribers only,” but I just opened up the backend and found almost 4000 new spam comments!! Askimet plugin is filtering even legit comments, so I experimented with turning it off. So, if you’ve been posting comments yet don’t see them in here, I apologize.

Any WordPress gurus out there with a recommendation? Contact me, kids.

7. I’m a few weeks from launching a kickass bartering website. Wow, I am stoked for this one. I first mentioned this on Budgets are Sexy (Man, I love that blog), but expect a full rollout, and a call for feedback.

Okay, that’s it. Really appreciate all seven of you supporting my every move! Ha!

I left a comment not sure where it went! Glad you’re back.

First of all I hope this gets through the spam filters. I don’t care if it shows up on the site, but I do want you to know I enjoy your blog. I have about 12 blogs I check daily, and almost deleted yours. Glad you are back!

Is your niche site a secret or can you talk about it? I have a couple niches I am about to try to start up.

I also like how you described you being “too passive about passive income”. 100% feel you on that.

Also I like the shout out to J. Money as he is one of my favorite bloggers and the way I found your blog.

Just wanted to say “Thanks”. Hope my Tweet send a couple new readers your way!
